Even though only drummer Tommy Portimo and singer Tony Kakko were in the band when the original material was recorded and are still around to celebrate its fifteenth anniversary, the other three members didn't bring anything new to the table. If you already own the original Ecliptica album, then there is no need for you to pay attention to this release. It is what it is and my review should simply give you a better idea whether you should listen to and purchase this release or not. The discussion whether the option the Finnish quintet has chosen was the right one or not is ultimately futile.
Another alternative would have been to record an epic concert with material from all albums and perhaps a few new tunes played on stage. The band could have released a greatest hits record available outside Japan for once.
They could have opted to revamp beloved classics and obscure material from multiple albums. Personally, I feel that there might have been many better options for experimental Finnish power metal veterans Sonata Arctica to celebrate their fifteenth anniversary as a band. It might be debatable whether recording an outstanding debut album and beloved genre classic again is a good idea or not.
